Dealing with Anxiety

Alternative medicine offers many techniques for dealing with anxiety - all of them, in contrast to many traditional medical interventions, put you the patient to the fore.

In traditional medicine there tend to be two approaches to stress and anxiety:

  • Wholesale lifestyle changes
  • Chemical intervevention through a range of drugs such as valium and prozac.

In a sense the interventions from alternative medicine are not that different. Alternative medicine practitioners too would recommend lifestyle changes. However, alternative medicine offers a whole range of treatments that can help create those changes. Techniques such as:

and many more are all proven to help reduce the effects of stress and anxiety. In many ways it is common sense. All of the above are non-invasive strategies that are ultimately to do with self awareness and relaxation. Alternative therapies also offer their share of chemical interventions too. Herbal treatments for anxiety have been practiced for thousands of years and there are a wide range from which to choose. The alternative medicine 'holistic concept' applies here too - herbs alone are never prescribed as the way to reduce all the anxiety. Practitioners of herbal medicine will always prescribe that the herbs should be used with stress relieving techniques for maximum effectiveness.

The huge advantage from the use of herbs compared to most Western medicines is that the herbs are completely natural. Natural herbs with a role in reducing stress include bilberry, ginkgo biloba or milk thistle which contain flavonoids that help neutralize free radicals in addition to stress relieving herbs such as Piper methysticum, also known as kava kava or valerian which are two of the main herbal medicines used for anxiety.

Most people are familiar with aromatherapy. Aromatherapy provides perhaps the starkest manifestation of the holisism of alternative medicine techniques. Anxiety relieving herbs can be used in aromatherapy infusions. Combine sessions of aromatherapy with yoga, meditation or massage and you have the best of all worlds.

As more people turn away from traditional medical practices it is clear that the move to alternative therapies will continue. For the treatment of anxiety the holistic nature of alternative medicine practioners makes absolute sense for the treatment of anxiety.
